Monday, 11-29

****Science Fair Paperwork due tomorrow**** I need paperwork complete by mid-day to get it mailed out on time.

*Exam will be this Friday covering: Simple machines, Work, Power, Percent efficiency, mechanical advantage AND new material from this unit on Thermal Energy.
Outline of topics: here <-- This is a list of all the objectives we've covered and I've tried to teach you this semester so far, including this unit. It's a great place to start studying for your cumulative exam which is just a few weeks away.

Layout of the rest of the semester:
We will wrap up our tour of physics topics from motion to acceleration, forces, and energy this week. The tools we've learned will play a role in the rest of the year (and the next three). Our last unit (we may not finish it entirely this semester) is astronomy. I chose to teach Astronomy now because we have a fun event to look forward to on the last day of the semester; a lunar eclipse!... More on this later!

Today we learned about thermal energy; the scapegoat for all the energy losses we learned about in past units.
Today's homework:
READ p. 254-265 (yes, we skipped a chapter) <-- Do this tonight. Some classes will experience a quiz tomorrow.
P.258 practice problem, p.259#1-7 and p.265#1-5 due Wednesday.
Today's notes:
Temperature vs. thermal energy, Kinetic theory, Thermal E transfer (heat)
Thermal expansion applications (SR-71 Blackbird, space shuttle)
Conductor vs. insulator demonstration with melting ice
Coldest place in the universe reading
