GEEK WEEK - come here to watch videos showing you how to do the experiments!

GEEK WEEK intro video (please share with students):
Welcome to GEEK WEEK, a science interest initiative for Fox School District that's growing gradually from Fox Elementary.
Special thanks to Mistti and Pete Ritter, parent volunteers from FES, for running geek week!
Your classroom lab baggie and handout covers what you need to do any experiments, and details of what's going on.  If you'd prefer to have some FHS students run you (and the kids) through in video format, feel free to use the videos below!
We'll see you Thursday, April 7th, at Fox High School's library for our family Science Festival!
Come Hungry; Cub Scout troop 430 will be grilling dinner!

2015/2016 Students? Read here!

2015/2016: This year I've moved my classroom webpage to Google Classroom.

You'll have to log in to your "lastname.1234@foxc6.org" google account and then go to:

Homework due Friday, Tuesday

Read p. 362-369, problems #1-7 on p. 369.
Read p. 320-326, problems #1-9 on p. 326.

Also, due Tuesday:  Your Disaster / Emergency Preparedness plan!
1. your plan - what to do, where to meet, for different scenarios - disasters happen other times than when we're all together at home!
2. Actions / materials:  What you're going to do to mitigate risks or have materials on hand to increase survivability / comfort.  Check out lists at www.ready.gov
3. Parent signature after you discuss with your fam!

Friday, 4.16

Today in class:
Opportunity to buy an A in this course using rice; details in class.

a few questions were added to the review sheet

Also good to review are the answers to the meteorology packet questions; these were all reviewed in detail after they were graded to make sure you could correct your answers.

Meteorology Test postponed to Monday

Climate change notes today

And for 5th period, prompts following today's reading that you should be able to find evidence of in the article(s) about VORTEX:
1. How are tornadoes predicted in advance?
2. How much warning is possible before a tornado forms completely?  (assuming best case scenario)
3. What are some limitations to studying tornadoes?
4. What things that we learned in class are also in the article (vocabulary, concepts, etc.)
5. What words were new that you think you can piece together to figure out?
6. Interesting/weird stuff you read about
7. Assuming 1mph = approx 2 km/h, about how fast are the wind speeds in a tornado (in MPH)?

Meteorology Practice Quiz

Today:
meteorology worksheets turned in.
We made some predictions (our own forecast) of wind and temperatures using this map, then checked against actual data.
We did a self quiz (see below)
We prepared for tomorrow (or next class's) Specific Heat Lab.
Tomorrow we'll have a lab on Specific Heat; you'll try to figure out a way to compare two objects' specific heats:  Specific Heat describes how easy it is to heat up or cool down a certain material.

Next week we'll be having an exam over Meteorology!  Begin studying now.
Suggestions:
Vocabulary from the chapter.

chapter reviews, red and blue sections.  (see teacher's edition for answers!)

Self-quiz  (we looked at a few of these questions in class today)

Bonus Points Wednesday, HMWK for Thursday

Bonus points (a rare occurrence) available for helping out with the Fox Elementary Science Club this Wednesday.
Meet at FHS rm 312 at 3:15, and leave FES at 4:45.
at least one missing homework's value in bonus points will be awarded for helping little ones build flasher LED circuits and sailboat-cars.

HMWK due Thursday:
Read p. 518-522.
p. 522#1-7

Electricity and Magnetism Exam Tuesday!

Time to buckle down and study if you haven't already - chapter reviews (both blue and red sections) are highly recommended; for each chapter.
Also, you will need to use significant figures on this exam; I will review these rules with some examples in the context of electric power and Ohm's Law on Monday.

Topics for Exam:
Significant Figures
Electrostatics
Electric Current (Ohm's Law)
Electric Power
Magnetism: Fields and Interactions
Electricity and Magnetism

Learning to STUDY, Power Notes, BONUS points next Wed

Notes: Electric POWER

Today I was supposed to give the classes answers to any of the problems they tried out on p. 418-419.  I found that (almost) NO ONE DID IT.
(I did have a couple of people who did, and guess what?   They have been the kids setting the curves on past tests!  Go figure!)

SO....  much of class today for most classes was spent working on stuff that you could have done at home, with the textbooks, while your teacher is getting paid for nothing.

PLEASE!!! Before each test in this class, I always recommend chapter review problems.  I have the ANSWER KEY (Teacher's edition of textbook) ALWAYS AVAILABLE IN CLASS, ADVISORY, AND BEFORE SCHOOL.
You are welcome to check homework answers (that's part of why I give you two days for homework), ask me for guidance if you got answers wrong, and also check your answers to the chapter review.   As this is an HONORS COURSE, I should not have to force you to study; I provide the resources and guidance for you.

This carries through for the rest of the year; work the practice problems, and come in to check your answers.  You may be the next person setting the high score on an exam.

By the way, p. 420-421 would also be great practice for tomorrow's quiz and our exam that we'll have (Later) at the end of the electromagnetism unit.

Bonus Opportunity:  FoxElementarySchool Science Club next Wednesday (3/4) needs volunteers to help little fingers build circuits.  I will be taking the first 25 people who can commit.
Meet at FHS 3:15 and head up to FES w/ Freeman
Stay until 4:45, leave from FES.

Last week's quiz, Study HMWK, Quiz Friday

This week we worked on our Ohm's Law Lab.  Lots of great experiments happening from different groups!

Last week's quiz had several different versions.  See them all and study them to prepare for future tests here.

HMWK:  Review section for this chapter; p. 418-419, answers will be given to you on Thursday.
