Notes, Monday?? hmwk

Notes from Thurs/Fri: Plate Tectonics

HMWK for Monday: Read p. 362-369; p. 369#1-7.  Use 8km/s for p waves and 4 km/s for S waves instead of what your book says.  (past students may have already fixed it)

Also, compete for bonus points next Friday: memorize the most tectonic plates!

Electromagnet Lab Due Tuesday! Exam Monday (see Tuesday's post for review material)

Today in class you got time to review and finish copying data from labs, etc.  We also had some fun electrifying demonstrations.

Be sure to have an equation card for Monday.  Electric power and Ohm's law are the only equations that are new to this unit.

Lab: Electromagnets on Thursday, Exam: Electricity and Magnetism Monday

Today in class we prepared a bit for an electromagnet lab on Thursday; determined everyone's own IV and DV, basic procedure and materials lists.
If you have any materials that are not readily available in class, you must turn those in to me tomorrow so I can get them ready for you.

We'll likely have a short quiz tomorrow on magnetism (we didn't have the usual one last Friday as we had lab activities) after finishing our notes on magnetism (see last week's post)

Also, there was a request to share a folder where you could access all files for the class.
I can't guarantee that it's organized as well as this blog, but since phones can access it easier, here it is:
Physical Earth Google Drive SM2 folder
Let me know if it works better on your phone and I may try to streamline the folder organization for the future!

Items to start reviewing for the upcoming exam:  Chapter 13 and 14 section reviews and chapter reviews, as well as the problems in the back of the book.  My teacher's edition answer key is available to you anytime to check answers; just ask.

Also, one of the awesome students in 7th period requested a huge study guide for this exam.  Here you go!  :)
Electricity T/G/T game
Electrostatics WS with answers
Electrostatics Quizzes
Ohm's Law Simulation Optional Assignment <-- This must be turned in before the exam, as with the other ones from this unit!
Magnetism T/G/T game
Magnetism Jeopardy
Faraday: electromagnetic induction Optional Assignment <-- This must be turned in before the exam as well.

Thursday in class... Friday HMWK! Make motors tomorrow; bring 50 cents for a cylinder magnet!

HMWK:  Read p. 431-444; p. 437#1-5 and p. 444#1-6  due Friday.

Today in class:  Answers to p. 430 homework
Video: A History of Electric Power
Demonstration/activity:  Electromagnetic Induction in non-magnetic items
begin Notes: Magnetism if time allows.

Wednesday, February 12, 2014

Wednesday in class

Turned in homework
Watched video clips of megnetic induction

Resistance and car battery demonstration
pass-around: AC in light bulb and your magnet

Magnetic field activities:
direction of North  (geographic N is magnetic S) with compass and disc magnets
Iron filings in tubes
Magnetic fluid

Magnetic induction lab activities:
Induction in a coin
Electromagnet construction
Current carrying wire and your magnet
Solenoid - magnet (and car battery if needed) interaction
Change a compass with your solenoid

Answers to HMWK if time allows

See yesterday's post for Friday homework.
Tomorrow:  Video on electric power.

HMWK for Tuesday, quizzes today and AC/DC notes

HMWK for Tuesday:  Read p. 425-430, p. 430 #2-7.  On #4,5, and 6, you may draw a picture to answer rather than use words if you like.

HMWK for Thursday:  Read p. 431-444  p.437 #1-5 and p. 444#1-6.  You may use a flow chart for #1 and a t-chart or venn diagram for #2.

Magnets will be available starting today, before or after class begins, for $1 per pair.    (rectangular prism shaped  like elongated cubes)
Cylindrical ones (same price but a different shape) will be available next week on the days we'll be using them... probably Tues/Wed...  I don't want you to break or lose them before we need them.

If you don't have money to buy one, I do have some broken loaners that you may use.
If you want to return your magnet (unbroken) at the end of the unit, you may do so for a refund.

Please don't get into trouble with these in other classes (your other teachers will permanently confiscate them), and if you have babies in your home, keep these out of reach of them as well.

Mon 2/3

Today in class:  Ohm's Law wrap- up and explanation (station 7 from stations lab).  I'm changing points for the stations lab; all who participated well will receive full credit.

Also, we'll look at measuring electric power/cost in different devices, a big series/parallel demonstration, and have your Friday quiz (since we didn't have it on Friday).

You'll also have a pre-Chemistry quiz; you will be having Mrs. Greene, the Honors Chemistry I teacher, come and discuss Chem I vs Honors Chem I either Tuesday or Wednesday this week.

I'll show off the two new optional assignments (see last week's post) and if we have time we'll start notes on AC and DC.
